It seems ironic that the quartz that is coated is first carefully cleaned to remove any iron staining and then has metallic iron vapor deposited on it which instantly oxidizes to a really pretty orange color. The orange color that I have heard some people calling tangerine quartz is coated with iron. We were originally told it had a thin coating of gold on it, but I sent one to Bart Cannon who stuck it on his probe and it turned out to be mostly tin oxide. One is a very pretty blue color that has become known as aqua aura. All of them are coated in vacuum chambers I believe. We tell people what they are and try not to give them special names. (Some of the other yellow-brown hydrated iron oxyhydroxides are chemically unstable and quickly change into goethite once they dry, so you don't have to be concerned with putting their names on labels.)ģ1st Oct 2008 02:06 UTC Rock Currier Expert We have been selling several different kinds of quartz coated with various substances including, tin, iron, titanium, indium and some exotic dichroic coatings. Hematite and goethite are the culprits in almost all the dirty quartz crystals brought to market. Lots of other red, orange, yellow and brown iron oxide minerals (or iron phosphates, arsenates, silicates) are possible, but rare. "Hydrated iron oxide" (more correctly iron oxyhydroxide, as it is FeO(OH) and doesn't really contain any essential water molecules, although it can have a bit of adsorbed water) is usually Goethite (various shades of yellow to brown). In the past, when I've had such crystals, I've put them in acid to dissolve the iron oxides off - Silly me! I should have just renamed them "tangerine quartz" and saved myself a lot of work -)) Recent Images in DiscussionsĢ7th Oct 2008 18:05 UTC Alfredo Petrov Manager I guess "tangerine quartz" sounds much more marketable than "rusty quartz" or "limonite-stained quartz" (which is what it is).
